9 Electric grid
This work package will look at the electrical aspects of the wind turbine design. The partners will investigate the specific grid connection issues and will provide input to the other work packages on the electrical power aspects.
The objective of the work package is to define possible solutions for improving the reliability of a wind turbine as a building stone of a wind farm operating in the electrical power system.
The reliability of the power production by a wind farm depends on the wind turbine, the col-lecting grid of the wind farm including transformers, the power grid. Also the wind farm moni-toring system may have an influence on reliability. The consequences of grid abnormalities such as voltage dips, outages and unbalance, depend on the "ride-through" capability of the wind turbines. Finally, extreme wind conditions are important if all wind turbines are affected, i.e. if cut-out wind speed is reached or when the wind speed drops to virtually zero after a front passage.
The work package will investigate operational as well as statistical aspects of wind farm reli-ability. The operational aspects to be investigated include grid code requirements, extreme wind conditions and specific wind farm control options. The statistical aspects will be ad-dressed by the development of a database and by statistical modelling of the reliability of wind energy supply.
