Challenges

In order to realise a significant contribution of wind energy to the global electricity supply (e.g. 20%), in the future, very large wind turbines with an installed power of  over 10 MW each, operating as wind 'power plants' (often called wind farms) of several hundreds of megawatts capacity will become necessary.

Such machines are not available yet and their design requires the highest possible standards, encompassing complete understanding of external design conditions, availability of materials with extreme strength to mass ratios, advanced integrated control and measuring systems, all geared towards the highest degree of reliability.
